Autism and the T2201

I have received many questions over the years about the T2201 Disability Tax Credit Certificate, some obvious and others not so much.  For a parent new to autism, it can be an intimidating process.

I’ve put together a package with information that parents need to know before completing the T2201 form.  For those of you that don’t know, the T2201 form is how you apply for disability status with the federal government. Approval for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) leads to many tax breaks for parents of disabled children.

The PDF file can be obtained from the link T2201 Guide or from the Files page.

It should be compared against the latest T2201 form which can be downloaded here.

  1. Thank you SO much for this! This will be incredibly helpful to me when I apply for the DTC, which will be soon.

  2. Hi. As a parent of a newly diagnosed ASD child, it is nice to find these resources. The one question I had about the T2201 was how to respond to the question about the regular and consistent support I provide. It didn’t appear to be covered. Perhaps it is a non-issue in the case of a dependent child. Perhaps you can address that in an update. Thanks for being there.

  3. Hi

I can’t provide words for you as each child and the level of support that they require is different. Basically what you need to show is that the level of support that you provide to your child is well in excess of that required by a typically developing child.

Examples could include therapy, safety and communication issues.

  4. Well first of all thank you so much for this post and really this is very good information that you have shared here. Surely I am going to download the pdf and moreover I was too looking for the same information.
