Child Development Centres

Here is an example of government funding which is funneled into other organizations.  These facilities receive money from MSP, CLBC, ICBC and other assorted agencies and charities.

What services to they offer?

Some of the services include:

  • Supported Child Development Program
  • Speech-Language therapy
  • Summer Respite
  • Swim Lessons
  • Community drop-in
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Family Education Support and
  • Preschool

Are they any good?

The quality and availability of the services vary widely. The only way to know for sure is contact them and ask for a meeting.

In our case we received almost immediate physical therapy and pre-school funding via the Supported Child Care Development program (they provided funds so that we could pay for our therapist to attend pre-school with our child). They also arranged for him to attend a supervised horse riding program, which was outstanding. On the other hand it took two years to get SLP and Occupational Therapy services.

Do you have to use their facilities?

Many of the services are offered in-home, which greatly assisted our child.  For example, the physical therapist makes regular visits when our consultant is here and offers suggestions to incorporate exercises into his ABA program.
